DESCRIPTION:I will start with a brief summary of the current thinking at L
awrence Berkeley National Laboratory on the climate change problem\, and o
ur efforts to contribute to its management.\n\nThen I will describe two re
cent technology innovations intended to improve the lives of tens - possib
ly hundreds - of millions of people among the poorest 2 billion people on
the planet. Both technologies have emerged in the last few years from foc
used\, goal-driven research by teams of creative\, hard working researcher
s in my laboratory and in the field. The Berkeley-Darfur Stove is an inexp
ensive fuel-efficient biomass stove for displaced women and girls in Darfu
r\, Sudan. The second technology\, ECAR (Electrochemical Arsenic Remediati
on)\, affordably removes arsenic from groundwater supplies used for drinki
ng water in Bangladesh and neighboring regions.\n\nI will close the presen
tation with the six key lessons I learned from my work in technology innov
 ation.
