DESCRIPTION:How did structures such as clusters of galaxies arise in the U
 niverse? This talk is an intellectual history of attempts to understand th
 e origin of structure. I consider the contributions of the ancients\, Newt
 on\, the Herschels\, Isaac Roberts\, Vesto Slipher\, Einstein\, Georges Le
 maître and Edwin Hubble in the first half. The focus then changes to the 
 post-1964 situation\, with the discovery of the cosmic microwave backgroun
 d\, and the emergence of a consensus viewpoint for the nature of the Hot B
 ig Bang. The presentation concludes with the role of dark matter and dark
