DESCRIPTION:For several decades interactive fiction -- a form of computer
game and digital literature -- has been developed in interesting ways by p
rogrammers and authors. I'll sketch the history of text-based interactive
fiction from 1975 to the present\, suggest some ways in which interactive
fiction\, despite being commercially dormant\, may nevertheless remain rel
evant. I'll show some examples of compelling recent work in this form\, in
cluding my own piece\, Book and Volume\, which was just released on Novemb
er 17. If there's time\, I may discuss future directions for an IF develop
 ment system.
