DESCRIPTION:Judith Shawcross from Manufacturing Industry Education Researc
h Group (MIERG) is going to share her research work linking ISMM short ind
ustrial placements and manufacturing teaching and learning. The seminar s
ummary is the following:\n\nShort Industrial placements – a framework to
support teaching and learning\n\nShort industrial placements\, where grou
ps of students tackle a real company issue in the workplace\, are key feat
ures of IfM programmes in both the Industrial Systems Manufacturing and Ma
nagement (ISMM) MPhil\nprogramme and the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos
(MET). As part of doctoral research to identify how students can be suppor
ted in developing complex work place related skills during Higher Educatio
n\, an\nevidence based framework of key activities has been developed.\n\n
An action research approach was used in collaboration with the ISMM cohort
and tutors of 2012-2013. Four action research cycles were used to enable
the development of the framework over the four rounds of short industrial
placements used in ISMM.\n\nThis framework describes a short industrial pl
acement in terms of seventeen broad activity groups. Twelve are related t
o specific process stages from ‘making sense of the placement brief’ t
o ‘submitting the\nplacement report’ \, a further two activity groups
capture the ‘management’ aspects of placements and the final three rel
ate to generic activity groups that underpin the whole placement. Each act
ivity group\nis then broken down into a number of key activities resulting
in a more detailed level framework.\n\nThe challenges are now to use this
framework to support both teaching and student learning for ISMM\, to see
if it represents other short industrial placements used in other programm
es and to continue research into more generic components that remain un-ca
ptured in a useful format.\n\nFor further details contact Judith Shawcross
