DESCRIPTION:Abstract: One of the main objectives in the communications fie
ld is to increase the achievable bit-rates. A different paradigm is presen
ted by energy-efficient communications\, where the goal is to send a fixed
amount of information expending the less possible amount of energy. We ha
ve developed a model for the energy consumption of communications over SIS
O and MIMO links. Our model is the first to systematically include the eff
ects of the randomness of wireless channels. Using this model\, we have fo
und that there exists a deep link between energy-efficiency and the multip
lexing-diversity trade-off. In effect\, when the transmission distance is
large then schemes with large diversity gain are the best choice. On the c
ontrary\, schemes with large multiplexing gain are optimal for communicati
ng over short link distances. In the talk we show how this general princip
le rules the optimization of the irradiation power\, modulation size\, cod
 e-rate and MIMO modulation scheme.
