DESCRIPTION:One of the largest uncertainties in forecasts of the melting i
ce caps is the role played by water at the base of the ice in lubricating
ice flow. Recent observations of the Greenland Ice Sheet have shown that s
ummer melt water penetrating from the ice surface substantially affects th
e rate at which the ice slides\, while in Antarctica basal water plays a (
presumably) controlling role in the dynamics of ice streams. I will discu
ss the latest attempts to model subglacial drainage\, focussing mainly on
the highly dynamic situation when surface melt water enters the ice.
