DESCRIPTION:An electric current flowing through a metal wire made\, for in
stance\, of copper will be subject to losses due to the electric resistanc
 e. At low temperatures\, however\, some materials become superconducting\,
hence electric currents can flow without resistance and thus without loss
es. Superconductors go one step further\, they can also expel magnetic fie
lds. I will demonstrate and briefly explain these two fundamental properti
es of superconductors. Finally\, I will sketch the boundaries of current u
nderstanding of superconductors and show how my research aims to provide n
 ew insight.
