DESCRIPTION:What is Chinese materia medica? Is it a book\, a genre\, or a
peculiar kind of world view? In the history of China\, what kinds of actor
s were creating\, transmitting and studying materia medica texts\, and how
should we place the Chinese term bencao vis-à-vis other disciplines\, su
ch as natural history\, pharmacology and botany? How should we consider th
e great compilation <Bencao gangmu> in the history of Chinese materia medi
ca? My research focuses on the evolution of pharmacology and society in 16
th-18th century\, and in my presentation I shall try to draw some connecti
ons between the learning of materia medica and some aspects of late imperi
 al Chinese society and culture.
