DESCRIPTION:British and Dominion soldiers’ Great War field publications
are relatively well known\, but the way troops created cartoon narratives
has been neglected. The concerns of the lower ranks about medical service
 s\, discomforts\, food and drink\, leave\, military routines\, complaints
about officers\, and expectations versus emerging reality\, all emerged as
humour from adversity. The central comic character was the long suffering
citizen soldier\, portrayed as a source of entertainment and morale boost
 ing.
