SUMMARY:The state and mass of H2 in starbursts: a new emerging view in\n t
he age of ALMA - Padelis Papadopoulos (U. Cardiff)

DESCRIPTION:I will be briefly reviewing our past views on the molecular ga
s in galaxies\, its state and mass\, and how we acquired them. Then a new
potentially very different emerging view will be detailed. This was ushere
d by a larger ground-based survey of high-J CO and HCN lines of local merg
er/starburst galaxies\, now augmented by very high-J CO Spectral Line Ener
gy Distributions (SLEDs) from Herschel. I will conclude by unfol
ding this picture across cosmic epoch\, and its utility in the ag
e of ALMA\, as well as SKA and its precursors.
