DESCRIPTION:Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) is a 3rd genera
tion mobile communication system. It is a system where the telecom\, compu
ter and media industry converges. The WCDMA network is be a multi-service
"network of networks"\, providing both traditional telecommunications ser
vices and new Internet based services over the same network. W-CDMA is a
third-generation mobile wireless technology that promises much higher data
speeds to mobile and portable wireless devices than commonly offered in t
oday's market. The present seminar discusses the open architecture of the
WCDMA Core Network ensuring a smooth migration from the existing 2G syste
ms to the technologies of tomorrow. WCDMA will be realized by the introduc
tion of the WCDMA Radio Access Network (RAN) to the enhanced GSM Core Netw
orks. The reason for the popularity of spread spectrum technique is addres
sed and the evolution of WCDMA over CDMA is also pointed out. The protocol
architecture of WCDMA and the compatibility of existing GSM system with
WCDMA system are also discussed in brief. \n\nLela Mirtskhulava is current
ly an Associate Professor\, Interim Chair of Technical Informatics at the
Department of Computer Sciences\, Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences\,
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University\, Georgia. She has been Roa
ming & Interconnections Operations Senior Engineer in \nthe Core Networks
Section\, Department of ICT\, Geocell LLC (2G/3G GSM operator) since 2000
