DESCRIPTION:A number of recent studies using high-throughput single cell g
ene expression profiling have uncovered a surprising degree of cell-to-cel
l variability within apparently functionally homogeneous embryonic or indu
ced pluripotent stem cell populations. Collectively\, these reports sugges
t that both deterministic and stochastic mechanisms play key parts in plur
ipotent stem cell identity. In this talk I will discuss some of the origin
s and consequences of this cell-cell variability\, particularly focussing
on the role that feedback loops in the underlying transcriptional regulato
ry circuitry have in controlling population variability. I will also outli
ne a statistical view in which appropriately defined heterogeneity is a ce
ntral feature of pluripotent stem cell populations.\n\nHosted by Florian M
