DESCRIPTION:The Earth is a beautiful place\, yet it is struck by earthquak
 es\, hurricanes\, floods\, volcanoes\, tsunamis and\, most recently\, clim
ate change. Because the energy in natural events far exceeds that availabl
e to mankind\, little can be done either to stop or to alter the occurrenc
e of such events. However\, can they be accurately forecast\, with a view
to mitigating the associated hazards? The lecture will concentrate on desc
ribing what we understand about these natural disasters and how mathematic
al reasoning contributes to this understanding. A few desktop experiments
will be performed during the lecture all guaranteed risk free!
