DESCRIPTION:It is well known how to communicate efficiently over the band-
limited additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The scene changes co
mpletely if the additional constraint is imposed that the transmitted wav
eform may not be negative at any time instant. This scenario is common in
 short-range fiber-optical and free-space optical links\, where the intensi
ty but not phase of the transmitted light can be controlled and detected.
We present an analytical framework to analyze such communication scenarios
and design previously unknown modulation schemes.
