DESCRIPTION:The general packet radio system (GPRS) provides packet radio a
ccess for mobile Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and time-di
vision multiple access (TDMA) users. In addition to providing new services
for today's mobile user\, GPRS is important as a migration step toward th
ird-generation (3G) networks. GPRS allows network operators to implement a
n IP-based core architecture for data applications\, which will continue t
o be used and expanded for 3G services for integrated voice and data appli
cations.\n\nGPRS due to its wireless infrastructure is characterized with
the following benefits: open architecture\, IP services\, same infrastruct
ure for different air interfaces\, integrated telephony and internet infra
structure\, leverage industry investment in IP and service innovation inde
pendent of infrastructure.\n\nMobility management is one of the major func
tions of a GPRS. In this talk the tasks of mobility management ( paging\,
attach\, detach)\, Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context handling\, intra- an
d inter- SGSN routing area update are discussed.
