DESCRIPTION:Aircraft engines typically include acoustic linings designed t
o absorb sound. Since experimental tests on aircraft engines are rather e
xpensive\, simple mathematical models have been used since the 1960s to pr
edict the performance of these acoustic linings\, and more recently numeri
cal simulations have supplemented these. However\, a fundamental problem
was recently discovered with the model used for acoustic linings (concerni
ng stability). This fundamental problem also has connotations for flow ov
er any non-rigid surface.\n\nIn this talk\, I will explain the fundamental
problem\, why we should care about it\, and what can be done to get aroun
 d it.
