DESCRIPTION:This seminar will present a journey into the acoustics of turb
ulent\nflows. It will start with jet noise\, one of the most challenging\n
topics in fluid mechanics\, for which we have developed a new theory\nfor
identifying the noise sources. It relies on filtering the flow in\nthe fre
quency-wavenumber domain to separate hydrodynamic fluctuations\nfrom acous
tic fluctuations. The theory has been applied to jets\nobtained by direct
numerical simulation and it provides greater\nphysical insights than class
ical acoustic analogies.\n\nWe will then discuss recent theoretical findin
gs on trailing edge\nnoise\, the dominant source of wind turbine noise. Th
ese findings have\nput an end to a long standing controversy on a popular
method for\npredicting trailing edge noise for rotating aerofoils. They sh
ow how\none can extend theoretical\, numerical or experimental results for
an\naerofoil sitting in a wind tunnel to a rotating aerofoil.\n\nWe will
conclude by focusing on one key aspect of both problems:\nunderstanding th
e peculiar geometry of acoustic waves in fluid flows.\nThis geometry will
be brought to light by introducing a newly defined\nacoustic space-time in
spired by the theory of special relativity.
