 sor Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz\, Scientific Director of FAPESP (Fundaç
 ão de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo\, www.fapesp.br/en/)\, w
 ill be giving a talk about the various ways in which FAPESP facilitates an
 d supports international research collaborations. Researchers in all acade
 mic areas interested in collaborations with Brazil –and specifically wit
 h universities or research institutes in the state of São Paulo—are mos
 t welcome to attend.\n\nFAPESP is a public foundation\, funded by the taxp
 ayer in the State of São Paulo\, with the mission to support research in 
 all fields of knowledge. São Paulo has a population of forty million and 
 generates 33% of Brazil’s GNP. The State constitution establishes that 1
 % of all state taxes should be allocated to the foundation\, and the gover
 nment transfers these funds monthly. FAPESP’s expenditures in 2012 were 
 R$ 1.035 billion (approximately US$ 500 million).\n\nThe foundation works 
 in close contact with the scientific community: all proposals are peer rev
 iewed with the help of area panels composed by active researchers. Besides
  funding research in all fields\, the foundation supports large research p
 rograms in Biodiversity\, Bioenergy\, Global Climate Change\, and in Neuro
 sciences.\n\nFAPESP maintains cooperation agreements with national and int
 ernational research funding agencies\, higher educational and research ins
 titutions and business enterprises. The international cooperation covers a
  broad range of countries and agencies (http://www.fapesp.br/en/6812) incl
 uding the UK Research Councils\, several UK universities\, the Agence Nati
 onale de Recherche (ANR) in France\, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (
 DFG) in Germany\, NOW (Netherlands)\, DSRC (Denmark)\, FCT (Portugal)\, an
 d NSF in the U.S.\n\nProfessor Brito is FAPESP’s Scientific Director\, a
 nd member of FAPESP’s Executive Board. An electronic engineer and a phys
 icist\, he is a professor at the Gleb Wataghin Physics Institute\, UNICAMP
 \, of which he was rector from 2002-2005. He was a resident researcher at 
 the AT&T's Bell Laboratories\, in Holmdel\, New Jersey and was also the Di
 rector of UNICAMP's Physics Institute (1991-1994\;1998-2002)\; Vice-Rector
  for Research at UNICAMP (1994-1998)\, and President of FAPESP (1996-2002)
