DESCRIPTION:Crossrail is designed to deliver an extra 10% capacity to the
London rail network by linking existing commuter routes through a brand ne
w tunnel under central London. Procuring a train for the route that is sm
art\, fit for purpose and integrates both with a completely new piece of a
utomated infrastructure\, and with sections of the legacy network\, is an
intriguing challenge. The train needs to work within the various practica
l constraints while still delivering the project vision of a world class t
ransport facility.\n\n*Phil Hinde* joined the former British Rail from sch
ool as an engineering management trainee and took his degree at Cambridge.
He has worked in electrification and plant engineering\, and railway ope
rations\, as well as looking after rolling stock matters. He was project
manager for the introduction of the Electrostar fleet of trains on the Sou
th Eastern network and is now the technical lead in the team buying the tr
ains for the Crossrail programme. \n\nIn his previous post as Engineering
Strategy Manager for the Association of Train Operating Companies he repre
sented UK on European standards and policy committees and led work on the
energy efficiency of trains and the perennial problem of leaves on the lin
e.\n\nTime: Refreshments served from 18.30. Talk starts at 19.00. Ends aro
und 20.30 following questions and discussion.\n\nVenue: Lecture Room 6 (up
