DESCRIPTION:Laser spectroscopy is a technique of immense value in atom opt
ics as\nrecognised with last year's Nobel Prize for Physics. Can it be app
lied\nto an artificial atom in the solid state\, a quantum dot? In order t
o\nremove the inhomogeneous broadening it is essential to attempt these\ne
xperiments on just a single quantum dot\, a challenging enterprise. We\nha
ve now succeeded in this mission. The talk presents laser spectroscopy\non
a single quantum dot presenting the detection scheme\, an exchange\ninter
action which we can turn on and off simply with a bias voltage\, and\nthe
effects of both electron and hole tunneling.\n\n
