DESCRIPTION:Problem solving is increasingly performed by people using comp
uter\nsoftware. Such programs include everything from office productivity\
ntools to specialized workflow managers. However\, a new genre of tools\nt
hat support teams of people in the solving process is emerging. While\nthe
need for solving complex problems increases\, the opportunities\nafforded
by the Internet and advances in artificial intelligence and\nhuman-comput
er interaction make it timely to develop such new tools.\nThis lecture int
roduces the topic and presents a prototype system\ncalled CoSolve. This sy
stem is based on the classical theory of\nproblem solving\, which is brief
ly reviewed in the lecture. Finally\, an\noverview of the related research
issues is given. These issues\ninclude\nsupport for problem formulation\
 , visualizing problem spaces\, adapting\nproblem-solving technologies for
design\, collaboration and\ncrowdsourcing in problem solving\, and designi
ng agents to support\ncollaborative problem solving.\n
