DESCRIPTION:How does the visual system adjust to long term changes in the
environment? Here we use novel "altered reality" technology to place subj
ects in versions of the world that have been image processed in real time.
This allows us to measure effects of adapting to altered contrast (at a
limited range of orientations) for adapting durations of up to 4 days. Th
is long-term adaptation: 1) Continues to grow in strength as the adapting
duration gets longer\, 2) Becomes more durable as the adapting duration ge
ts longer\, and 3) Is distinct from shorter term adaptation.
