DESCRIPTION:The term metaphor has a long history in HCI\, has been the cau
se of many debates\, and remains a central element of user interface desig
n practice. This talk summarises results from a recent project investigati
ng the intellectual history of HCI metaphor\, not only from the familiar p
erspective of the technical development of the modern UI\, but also from l
ess familiar perspectives in education\, philosophy and sociology of scien
ce. The historical development of the concept is contrasted with attitudes
among contemporary HCI researchers in order to propose appropriate strate
gies for future research and design methods.
