DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will describe a field trial designed to investi
 gate the\npotential of remote\, situated messaging within the home. Five h
 ouseholds\nused our "HomeNote" device for approximately a month. The resul
 ts show a\ndiversity of types of communication which highlight the role of
 \nmessaging both to a household and to a place. It also shows the ways in\
 nwhich these kinds of messages enable subtle ways of requesting action\,\n
 expressing affection\, and marking identity in a household -\ncommunicatio
 n types which have received little attention in the research\nliterature. 
 These in turn point to new concepts for technology which I\nwill go on to 
 describe.
