DESCRIPTION:I will briefly review the rise of the new quantum devices that
started with the observation of quantum coherent evolution in a Cooper-pa
ir charge qubit by Nakamura and Tsai in 1999 and its subsequent developmen
t into a range of different types of superconducting qubits (charge\, flux
\,\nphase…) and readout technologies. I will discuss our work at Royal H
olloway in which the quantum dynamics of superconducting nano-fabricated d
evices are driven by the non-linear nature of the Josephson inductance. T
he potential for the use of such devices lies not only in the field of qua
ntum computing but as a new generation of quantum limited electromagnetic
  sensors of varying types.\n
