DESCRIPTION:The media are full of stories about the risks we take every da
y\, whether acute risks of sudden harm from accidents or violence\, or chr
onic risks from our unhealthy lifestyles and the poisonous environment. Th
ese stories often use relative risks\, telling us that we are X% more at r
isk than someone else - but these are known to be manipulative. I shall e
xplore some metaphors for vividly communicating risks\, such as the ‘eff
ective’ age of your body\, and two units that can be used for small acut
e and chronic risks - the Micromort and the Microlife.
