DESCRIPTION:Conventional\, codified\, methods of assessing the capacity o
f reinforced and pre-stressed concrete half-joints can prove excessivel
y conservative when applied to existing structures\, which were de
signed to less onerous standards and have suffered significant in service
deterioration. \n\nThis seminar will discuss the use of a three pronged ap
proach to the assessment of an existing half-joint \nusing lower and upper
bound plastic analyses\, supported by non-linear finite element methods.
This combined approach\, with cross pollination of mechanisms between meth
ods\, sought to converge the assessed capacities from the three techniques
\, producing a result which is reliable without being excessively conserv
ative. The approach is discussed with reference to the A14 Huntingdon Rail
 way Viaduct.\n\n
