DESCRIPTION:This talk will demonstrate successes and limitations of linear
  stability theory in assessing the nonlinear behavior of some real unstabl
 e flows\, observed by experiments and direct numerical simulations (DNS). 
 Successful examples from my own research will be shown\, including an accu
 rate prediction of the experimental wave growth on a liquid sheet\, and ma
 tching of stability boundaries\, frequencies and mode shapes with DNS for 
 wake flows (linear global modes vs. nonlinear Koopman modes). I will also 
 show my own examples of when (and why) the linear and nonlinear behavior o
 f the flow were different.
