DESCRIPTION:Numerical methods such as finite elements allow us to analyse
glass structural elements with considerable precision. The effect of inhe
rent residual stress presents in glass can exhibit behaviour which is not
well modelled by conventional finite element models or allowable stress ba
sed rules of thumb. Our present state of understanding means that it is n
ot generally possible to predict stress concentration generated within geo
metric features or long-term material behaviour of glass under sustained l
oads. The seminar will present some examples of hybrid finite element /con
tour method for predicting the residual stress present in commercially ava
ilable glass. Experimental measurements obtained by curvature measurement
of glass beams will be presented and compared. A few practical applicati
ons of the new model will also be discussed.\n\n
