DESCRIPTION:I shall discuss the elliptic genera of a class of (2\,2)\nsupe
 rconformal field theories in two dimensions with non-compact\ntarget space
 s. These theories have a continuous spectra and unequal\ndensity of states
  for bosons and fermions. The corresponding elliptic\ngenera are not holom
 orphic and have mock modular behaviour. I shall\ndiscuss these theories fr
 om the ultra-violet gauged linear sigma model\npoint of view\, and explain
  how the lack of holomorphicity arises from\nan axionic compensator field 
 that cures the chiral anomaly in the\ntheory.
