DESCRIPTION:We define the notion of _armchair science_ – roughly\, a con
centration on the development of idealized theory with only a loose relati
on to possible empirical application\, and in particular with no\nspecific
real-world target in mind. We argue that in many fields there is rather t
oo much of it. Philosophy of science should be at the forefront of\nhighli
ghting this widespread problem\, and proposing solutions to it. Yet\, for
a couple of reasons\, existing philosophical work on modelling has fallen
 short in this critical role.
