DESCRIPTION:Inverse problems are ubiquitous in geophysics\, and constitute
one of the main ways we can learn about the Earth. A notable example bein
g the use of seismic tomography to construct models of the Earth's interio
r structure. In this talk we describe\, in a non-technical manner\, the im
portance of quantifying uncertainty in the solution of such inverse proble
ms\, and the difficulties inherent in any attempt to do so.
