DESCRIPTION:Two simple systems are analysed numerically: the flow past a c
ylinder and that in a channel driven by a sinusoidal pressure gradient. I
n both\nconfigurations an elastic filament is present\, symmetrically plac
ed and\nhinged at the wall (of the cylinder or the channel). In both cases
we find\nthat a symmetry breaking bifurcation may arise through the fluid
-structure interaction\, causing either a net lift (in the case of the cyl
inder) or a net mean flow (in the pulsating channel). We explore some poss
 ible reasons for this behaviour.
