DESCRIPTION:In cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED)\, strong coupling of a
toms and light is studied via confinement of light inside a cavity. The s
ame situation can be achieved in the microwave regime in superconducting c
ircuits with an electrical resonator playing the role of the cavity\, and
a well designed solid state quantum system being used as an artificial ato
m [1]. In this talk I will discuss results on probing the physics of quant
um dots in GaAs with this circuit QED architecture [2]\, and some other po
tential new forms of solid state cavity QED that we are beginning to inves
 tigate at Oxford.\n\n[1] Wallraff et al.\, Nature 431\, 162 (2004)\; Schoe
