DESCRIPTION:The term "moonshine" was introduced in the 70's to describe a
mysterious relation between automorphic functions and representations of f
inite groups\, two distinct and fundamental concepts in mathematics. Recen
tly\, a novel type of moonshine phenomenon\, named "umbral moonshine"\, wa
s discovered. Evidence suggests that umbral moonshine enjoys a close conne
ction to string theory compactified on K3 surfaces. In this talk I will re
port on the progress of this moonshine exploration from a string theoretic
  perspective.
