DESCRIPTION:We have located individual influenza victims from the historic
al records at the Etaples Army base and linked these otherwise geographica
lly constrained outbreaks in France to American nurses and doctors who tra
velled as volunteers between Etaples and Boston in the USA. We propose tha
t this group of volunteers could form a conduit to transfer an evolving in
fluenza virus away from the Western Front to Harvard Hospital and beyond.
