DESCRIPTION:There is growing evidence for culture in non-human great apes.
However\, evidence for culture is widespread in the animal kingdom (e.g.\
, bees have it - and so do fish). A different form of culture - cumulative
culture - has proven much more difficult to find outside the human case.
I will provide evidence consistent with the view that even non-human great
apes did not develop this special form of culture - and I will also show
data that pinpoints a key skill necessary for allowing cumulative culture
(i.e.\, imitation) that they seem to lack.
