DESCRIPTION:The development of modern European literature\, especially the
novel\, is strongly linked to the secularization of Christian ideals of l
ove from the devotion to God to the devotion between men and women. Curiou
sly\, however\, it did not serve the same role in Jewish culture and parti
cularly in Hebrew literature in the 19th century. This\, despite the fact
that modern Hebrew literature was as European as its Anglo\, Romance\, Ger
manic and Slavic sister literatures\, and was shaped by similar forces. Th
e lecture will explore this peculiar difference and try to understand the
different role love had in the works of modern Hebrew writers.
