DESCRIPTION:Cities in the UK\, and across the globe\, are increasingly imp
ortant for the future success of the national economy. The 64 biggest cit
ies in the UK already house more than 50% of the population\, produce 60%
of the country’s GVA\, provide employment for more than 70% of the count
ry’s high skilled workers and are the preferred location for nearly 80%
of new migrants. But whilst some cities are increasingly productive and p
rosperous others are struggling to adapt to economic change and provide op
portunities for their residents. This lecture will explore some of the pa
tterns and trends relating to city economic performance across the UK over
the last decade or so\; highlight which cities have been performing well
and which have been struggling\, and why this pattern of unevenness seems
to be getting worse\; and. Explore the policy implications for national go
vernment and cities in responding to these trends.\n\nIn his role as Senio
r Economist Paul leads on the data analysis undertaken by the Centre. He h
as a particular interest in research on the spatial development of city ec
onomies\, private sector growth\, and enterprise. His current work focuse
s on the role that city centres play in the wider city economy\, the evolu
tion of out of town employment sites and what this means for future econom
ic growth.\nPaul is a regular media commentator\, including print\, radio
and TV\, and has spoken at conferences across the UK on subjects relating
to the performance of city economies. He has an economics degree from Sidn
ey Sussex College\, Cambridge and a Postgraduate Certificate in Econometri
 cs from Birkbeck College.\n
