DESCRIPTION:Two unrelated problems are discussed. In the first\, the break
down of an electric fuse is considered. It is assumed that the wire melts
and the liquid pinches off in finite time. Similarity solutions close to p
inchoff are sought in the longwave limit and compared with high-speed phot
ographic images.\n\nThe second problem considers the dynamo produced by la
minar flow of conducting fluid down helical pipes. Such steady flow genera
tes magnetic field spontaneously. Animations of the fully nonlinear behavi
our of this dynamo are presented\, showing oscillations\, quenching and re
versal. Calculations are extended to two interwoven helical pipes which dr
ive a dynamo in a wider range of Reynolds numbers.
