DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:*\nI've recently completed a major study of the 'who
is' contact details for\ndomain names used in malicious or harmful Interne
t activities. ICANN\nwanted to know if a significant percentage of these d
omain registrations\nused a privacy or proxy services to obscure the perpe
trator’s identity ?\nNo surprises in our results: Yes!\n\nWhat was perha
ps surprising was that quite a significant percentage of\ndomains used for
lawful and harmless activities ALSO used privacy and\nproxy services.\n\n
But the real distinction is that when domains are maliciously\nregistered\
, then contact details are hidden in a range of different ways\nso that 9
out 10 of these registrants are a priori uncontactable –\nwhereas the un
contactable rate varies between a quarter and at most two-\nthirds for the
non-malicious registrations.\n\nThis talk discusses how these results wer
e obtained and what their\nimplications are for the future of the whois sy
stem. It also gives some\ntechnical insight into the innovative design of
whois parsing tool that\nhas enabled some extremely variable reporting for
mats to be handled\, at\nsubstantial scale\, in an automated manner.\n\n*B
io:*\nRichard Clayton came back to Cambridge in 2000 to study for a PhD on
\n'Anonymity and Traceability in Cyberspace'. Since getting his degree he\
nhas stayed on as an academic PostDoc "because it's more fun than\nworking
". The main focus of his research is on cybercrime\, and\nparticularly on
'phishing'. The ICANN project described in this talk was\ndone during his
recently completed three year collaboration with the\nNational Physical La
boratory (NPL) on the EPSRC funded project "Internet\nSecurity".\n\n
