DESCRIPTION:Knowledge of time-resolved pressures\, densities of spray and
spall is required for the full understanding of ejecta production. One met
hod of studying spray and spall is through the use of piezoelectric probes
. A widely-used piezoelectric probe is manufactured by Dynasen Inc. The
probes performance in a range of environments will be discussed\, includin
g gas-gun generated sprays. Spray densities obtained via X-ray imaging and
high-speed photography are compared with the probe density measurements t
o give an indication of how well the probes perform. Various probe shieldi
ng arrangements are discussed\, and the importance of impedance mismatches
between the impacting material and the PZT is highlighted.
