DESCRIPTION:Alek Petty from the Earth Sciences Department will be discussi
ng why we see an increase in Antarctic sea ice cover despite the increasin
g effects of climate change.\n\nThe Arctic sea ice cover has experienced a
rapid decrease in extent and thickness over recent decades. In contrast\,
the Antarctic sea ice cover has experienced a small increase. Current und
erstanding of Antarctic sea ice is limited\, however the recent sea ice tr
ends have been linked to regional trends in the winds surrounding Antarcti
ca. The contribution from anthropogenic climate change and the Antarctic o
zone hole is still poorly understood\, with natural variability probably p
laying a considerable role. Antarctic sea ice is a crucial component of th
e Earth's climate system\, so improved understanding is urgently required.
