DESCRIPTION:Modern physics attempts to explain the full complexity of the
physical world in terms of three principles: gravity\, relativity and quan
tum mechanics. This raises important fundamental questions such as: 'Why i
s our Universe so large and old?' and 'Why is it almost\, but not perfectl
y\, homogeneous and isotropic?' Professor Efstathiou will describe how rec
ent measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation can help ans
wer these questions and elucidate what happened within 10-35 seconds of th
e creation of our Universe.\n\nThe talk is *free* for CUPS members\, *£2*
for non-members\, and will be followed by a wine reception.
