DESCRIPTION:This paper combines our interest in computational neuroscience
with\nour recent interest in Ising models. In contrast to the traditiona
l\nHopfield model the Ising approach is used here to make sense of _real_\
nneural data taken primarily from the salamander retina. Perhaps\nsurpris
ingly this simple pairwise model can account for most of the\nvariability
in the data and makes interesting predictions about the\nexistence of a ph
ase transition that could occur as the number of\nneurons increases above
 about 200.\n\nhttp://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v440/n7087/full/nature0
