DESCRIPTION:Through heat and carbon uptake\, the ocean reduces or delays a
tmospheric warming due to radiative forcing. However the feedback of futur
e changes of dynamical processes on surface temperatures and levels of atm
ospheric CO2 is not well constrained. I will discuss a set of scalings in
order to quantify the role of different dynamical processes in setting th
e heat and carbon uptake with a focus on the Southern Ocean wind and eddie
 s. The scalings will form the basis for a conceptual model of ocean uptake
to interpret the results of complex general circulation models\, includin
g quantifying sources and sinks of ocean heat uptake and feedback processe
s involving air-sea carbon fluxes. I will concentrate on adjustment timesc
ales of ocean and carbon uptake under different climate change scenarios.
