DESCRIPTION:Hyperelliptic curves were introduced by Abel in 1826. They wer
 e intensively studied over the real and complex numbers by Abel\, Legendre
 \, Jacobi\, and Riemann. In this lecture I will discuss some recent advanc
 es that have been made on arithmetic questions\, such as the existence of 
 rational points.
