SUMMARY:Air quality and climate impacts of the transport sector: planes\,
trains and automobiles - Marc Stettler (University of Cambridge)
DTSTART:20140428T131500Z

CONTACT:Dr Amanda Maycock
DESCRIPTION:Please note this talk has been rescheduled due to clashes with
several other atmospheric science meetings on the original date.\n\nThe t
ransport sector accounts for 36% of total energy consumption in the UK and
26% globally. Emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels hav
e impacts on the climate and as transport networks are typically located c
lose to people\, these emissions lead to significant air quality and publi
c health impacts. In this seminar I will discuss experimental and modellin
g work carried out in the Engineering Department that has sought to improv
e our understanding of these impacts. These projects include (i) an evalua
tion of the air quality impacts of airports in the UK\, including future s
cenarios in which a third runway is built at Heathrow or a new hub is buil
t in the Thames Estuary\; (ii) revisions to our understanding of global av
iation black carbon emissions\; and (iii) the Energy Efficient Cities Init
iative and our work to model air quality impacts of transport and building
s at the local-scale in the City of Westminster.\n
