DESCRIPTION:Winton teatime discussion on Photocatalysis for converting sun
light into industrially viable forms of energy or fuels. Hosted by Prof D
avid MacKay and Dr Gilberto Teobaldi. Dr Teobaldi is based at the Stephens
on Institute for Renewable Energy at the University of Liverpool and the D
epartment of Chemistry.\n\nAs the costs of energy production increase\, du
e to both the limitation of resources and the impact of an oil-fuelled eco
nomy on the climate\, the significance of materials and technologies capab
le of converting sunlight into industrially viable forms such as electrica
l power or fuels has been steadily growing. Crucial to this energy convers
ion is the presence of photo-catalysts (PCs) i.e. substances capable of ge
 nerating\, upon light absorption\, highly reactive excited electron-hole (
e*-h) pairs which may eventually transfer excited state energy or\, follow
ing their separation\, enter an electric circuit or being transferred to r
eactants. These processes can then be used to produce electrical current\,
fuels and chemical feedstocks\, to decompose pollutants\, and even for vi
 ruses or bacteria disinfection.
