DESCRIPTION:We have had ample warning of the threat of climate and ecologi
 cal  change occasioned by our ever growing emissions of carbon dioxide. No
 netheless we have failed to sufficiently heed these warnings\, pleading di
 fficulties of technology\, politics and economics. In this talk I will dis
 cuss the magnitude of the problem\, which is driven by the world’s growi
 ng demand for energy coupled with our overriding dependence on fossil fuel
 s. I will describe briefly the mechanisms of greenhouse warming\, the grow
 th in emissions driving this warming\, how we might expect global temperat
 ures to evolve and what we would need to do to mitigate these effects.\n
